Hike Through History with the Crown Point Road Association

Each summer hikes are conducted on various sections of the road. Members and the general public are invited to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the hardships and dedication of the road builders. Original bridges, stone abutments, grave sites, camp sites, and abandoned cellar holes give mute testimony to the courage and determination of our ancestors. The Association hopes to encourage public awareness of the legacy these pioneers left our country and our state. Membership is invited, but not required to attend any of the events listed in this year's Calendar.

Come join us for the following events in 2010!

May

Cavendish - Jim Zimmer will lead a walk on his home ground in Cavendish. Beginning at the Old Cemetery of early Settlers at Marker 27, Jim will show us some Revolutionary War veteran's headstones and tell some of their stories. Next we will head along the old road passing Markers 26 and 25, old orchards, stonewalls, early homes and good views of Hawk's Mountain. The hike ends just three miles down the road at Tarbell Hill Marker 24.

June

Chimney Point -  The day will start with a visit to the Chimney Point Historic site in Vermont. Later, we will take the new ferry across the lake to the Crown Point Historic site in New York. This is a good day for folks who can't take part in our more strenuous hikes. We will share the good history, lunch, and laughs without the bushwhacking! At Crown Point Tom Hughes, CPRA board member and Historic Site Director will give us an insider's perspective of this amazing historic and cultural resource.

The Vermont History Expo runs at the Tunbridge Fair Grounds June 26 & 27. The CPRA will be showing the video from the 2009 End to End Hike and members will be in attendance to discuss the Old Military Road to any who will listen. July

Shoreham -  Jim Rowe will lead a hike along the Crown Point Road near the Pinnacle in Shoreham. Last summer's End to End Hike definitely found out where the road didn't go. Jim will clear up our Pinnacle questions with the help of Larry Clark, long-time CPRA  member and hike leader. Bushwhacking is a possibility but we probably won't take the cliff route this year (the poison ivy can't possibly be that tall two years in a row!)

August

Mount Holly -  This year we are continuing the CPR auto-tour by heading west from the Half-Way Encampment in Mount Holly and hoping to make it into Shrewsbury Center . These caravans have been popular for the past few years. We stop at each marker and discuss the history pertinent to each site. This year Jim Moore & Barry Griffith will lead the tour together. Marita Johnson will once again be video-taping the tour for Peg TV. The past auto tours have proven to be gems of "Vermontiana". Come join us and share the history.

September

Quebec City - A bus trip to this historic city on the St. Lawrence River is in the works. More information coming soon.

October

Perkinsville - Annual meeting and potluck dinner at the Perkinsville Church. The speaker this year is Tom Hughes, Director of the Crown Point Historic Site. Bring a place setting and a dish to share.
